Meeting: February 2020

We welcomed the "roaring twenties" with a meeting devoted to health and wellness, inspired by Jane Austen, of course. Hosts Debbie and Louis Rieke offered a beautiful table for tea and treats, with many goodies on the healthy side [for a change].

The afternoon's program was a discussion of The Jane Austen Diet, by Bryan Kozlowski. Ann Cox, Holly Yates, Roger Moore, and Caroline Davis presented chapter synopses, covering food, drink, exercise, body image, and mental well-being, and a lively conversation of Austen's characters and their behaviors followed.

A special moment in the gathering was a remembrance of our late friend, Dede Clements, who passed away shortly after our last meeting, in December. Mildred Tilley shared heartfelt and vivid remarks about Dede, and Judy Isaac led the group in a toast. At her memorial service, Dede's son recalled that his mother "lived her life with dignity, modesty, bravery and kindness" -- truly, a description fitting of an Austen heroine.
