Meeting: May 2016

View of Chawton House, 1740s

Thanks to a generous Regional Grant, the JASNA Middle Tennessee Region hosted garden historian Paige Johnson on May 15. Addressing “Jane Austen in the Garden,” Ms. Johnson moved brilliantly between the century-long conversation about landscape theory and design which Austen would have known and the treatment of landscape in Austen’s own life, letters, and fiction.

Charting the changes in garden design from the middle of the eighteenth century to the beginning of the nineteenth, Ms. Johnson deftly demonstrated the ways in which “nature” was always entangled with considerations of economy, politics, and technology.

A lively Q&A followed the fascinating presentation as did tea, of course, and a wealth of treats. JASNA Middle Tennessee member Judy Isaac opened her Brentwood home for the gathering, including her beautiful terraced garden, appropriately for the topic, the time period, and the lovely spring weather.
