Meeting: September 2017

We welcomed Professor Scott Juengel of Vanderbilt University, whose teaching and research cover the "long eighteenth century" (1660-1832), to a September 24 afternoon meeting at the Green Hills Library.

His engaging talk, titled "Jane Austen and World History," is based on his current book project that explores hospitality, human rights, politics, and the Romantic-era novel. Dr. Juengal discussed examples of "current affairs" in three of the novels as well as how, in James Edward Austen-Leigh's 1871 memoir, her family assessed (or re-assessed) her political opinions.
