Speculation at Vanderbilt Library

The Friends of Vanderbilt Libraries hosted "Playing Cards with Jane Austen: An Evening of

Speculation" (10/24/19), and were kind enough to include our Region in this special night of words and winning.

Robin Bates, a retired professor of English (Morehouse College and St. Mary's College) who now lives in Sewanee, TN, discussed card playing in literature, and specifically in Mansfield Park, offering observations on different characters' playing styles and what that reveals about their personalities.

Afterward, the full house reviewed the rules and shuffled the decks for several rounds of Speculation.
