Meeting: December 2017

The festive home of Carmen Gherman was the site of our holiday meeting on December 10, which featured a spooky program of ghost stories and poems.

Elizabeth Heffington explained about the popularity of ghoulish stories and Gothic ballads at Christmas time in the Regency before introducing Dr. Dennis Loyd, retired professor of English at Lipscomb University, who read “The Mistletoe Bough” and “Pearlin Jean.”

After Elizabeth led a birthday toast to Jane (with words by Rudyard Kipling), Dr. Loyd movingly shared several stanzas from Tennyson's In Memoriam as we prepared to ring out one year and ring in another.
